A financial contradiction is easy to detect and hard to judge. A company reports cumulative profit alongside negative operating cash flow; a related-party arrangement sits a little too close to the revenue line; an anti-dilution clause is written a little too aggressively. Spotting these is mechanical. Knowing which ones point to a genuine problem and which have an ordinary explanation — that is the entire discipline, and it does not come from a model. It comes from people who have spent years watching how real misstatements are built and disguised.
We are building that judgment into a forensic research capability, and we are looking for the senior forensic professionals who possess it.
What this work actually is
We engage experienced forensic professionals on a per-case contract basis to do the one thing that cannot be automated: render reasoned judgment on flagged companies.
You will not be gathering data. Our systems detect the contradictions, assemble the point-in-time financials, and pull the filing context. What we hand you is a clean, frozen snapshot of a flagged situation as it stood at the moment it was flagged. Your job is to look at it the way you would look at a case file, and reason it through.
Concretely, for each case you will:
- Examine a detected contradiction in context — the specific figures in tension, the financials as they actually stood at the time, the relevant filings.
- Write a structured reasoning chain — from the specific observation, to what it implies, to whether it points to a genuine problem, to the evidence that supports or undercuts that conclusion. Not a checkbox. The actual reasoning, the way you’d explain it to a colleague who was about to stake a position on it.
- Render a verdict — a genuine forensic signal, or benign and explainable.
We want to be explicit about that last point, because it matters more than it might seem: a well-reasoned “this is explainable” is exactly as valuable to us as flagging a real problem. We are not paying for red flags. We are paying for judgment. An expert who can look at a suspicious-looking arrangement and explain precisely why it is, in fact, routine is doing the most important work there is — separating the real from the merely plausible. A system that only ever learns what fraud looks like, and never what innocent-but-suspicious looks like, is a system that will cry wolf forever. You are teaching it the difference.
Who we’re looking for
You’ll recognize yourself in one or more of these:
- A forensic accounting background — CPA paired with real forensic investigation experience.
- Former SEC enforcement, PCAOB, or regulatory financial-investigation experience.
- Short-side or activist research experience analyzing financial misstatement.
- Big-4 forensic or restatement-investigation experience.
But the credential is not the point. The point is a specific cast of mind: the ability to reason about why a financial contradiction is or isn’t a genuine signal. Anomaly-spotting is common. Judgment is rare. We are hiring for the rare thing.
If you’ve ever been the person in the room who said “yes, that looks bad, but here’s the boring reason it’s actually fine” — and been right — this is for you. So is the inverse: the person who saw past a clean-looking set of books to the thing that didn’t add up.
The engagement
- Per-case or hourly, competitive and commensurate with experience. This is senior work and it is priced as such.
- Fully remote, flexible timing. Contract, per-case — not full-time. Built for established professionals who want high-value analytical engagements without a full-time commitment.
- An initial validation batch of roughly thirty high-conviction cases, with ongoing engagement based on fit.
- Markets: U.S.-listed equities — including U.S.-listed Chinese companies — and Hong Kong-listed companies.
About BearSignal
BearSignal is an institutional forensic research service, backed by CapitalWatch, an independent U.S. financial news organization established in 2015. We build the detection and the infrastructure. The judgment — the part that decides whether a contradiction is real — is the part we are asking you to bring.
If that is the part you’re good at, we’d like to hear from you.
